Fall Prevention at Home: A Room-by-Room Safety Checklist

Fall Prevention at Home: A Room-by-Room Safety Checklist

Falls are one of the leading causes of injury for older adults, but many are preventable. Small, thoughtful changes inside the home can greatly reduce risk while helping your loved one maintain independence and confidence.

Why Fall Prevention Matters

A fall can result in fractures, hospital stays and long recovery periods. Just as importantly, it can create fear that limits movement and reduces strength over time. Taking proactive safety measures protects both physical health and emotional well-being. Following is a room-by-room safety checklist:

Entryways and Hallways

•   Remove clutter and secure loose rugs

•   Improve lighting near entrances and stairs

•   Install sturdy handrails on staircases

Living Room

•   Arrange furniture to allow wide walking paths

•   Tuck away electrical cords

•   Keep commonly used items within easy reach

•   Add proper lighting near seating areas

Kitchen

•   Clean spills immediately

•   Store everyday items between waist and shoulder height

•   Use a sturdy step stool with a handrail

•   Add non-slip mats near sinks

Bathroom

•   Install grab bars near the toilet and in the shower

•   Use non-slip mats inside and outside the tub

•   Consider a shower chair or raised toilet seat

Bedroom

•   Ensure the bed allows feet to rest flat on the floor

•   Add bedside lighting or motion-sensor nightlights

•   Keep a clear path to the bathroom

Stairs

•   Install handrails on both sides

•   Keep stairs well-lit and free of clutter

•   Repair loose carpeting or uneven steps

Additional Fall Prevention Tips

•   Wear properly fitted, non-slip footwear

•   Schedule regular vision and medication reviews

•   Stay active with balance and strength exercises

•   Consider a medical alert system for added protection
